Explicit solution does not require the solution of a matrix equation at every time step. The next values are only dependant on the current and previous values. While not having to solve a matrix is a definite performance advantage, explicit schemes are only conditionally stable, and can go unstable if the Courant Limit, or equivalent stability creterium is not satisfied.
